Psalm 51

1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my trangressions.

2. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

6. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

7. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

9. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

12. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

13. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

14. Delover me from bloodguitiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

15. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

16. For thou desirest not sacrifices; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt oppering.

17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Seven Things Sin Does To A Christian

1. Sin Soils the Soul. Verse 2, 5. We fell dirty, so we cry out to God.

2. Sin Saturates the Mind. Verse 3. Until we deal with our sin, it will be constantly in our mind.

3. Sin Stings the Conscience. Verse 4. We are sorry for the wrongness of our sin; Godly sorrow brings repentance. Rather than being with his men in battle one day, King David remained at his palace. He went up on the roof. He saw and watched as a beautiful young woman bathed. He allowed himself to burn in list after Bathsheba.

After commiting adultry with Bathsheba, she became pregnant. When Davie was unsuccessful in getting her husband, Uriah to sleep with her, he sent him to the front line and instructed his men to back away and allow Uriah to be killed. Then what happened?

2 Sam. 12:1-15. 1. And the Lord sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. 2. The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds: 3. But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. 4. And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayvaring man that was come to him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

5. And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathhan, As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: 6. And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. 7. And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus said the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 8. And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

9. Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his shght? Thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife...

And so God brought upon the child a sickness that led to the child's death.

4. Sin Saddens the Heart. Verse 8, 12. We are not where we should be with the Lord. If we don't have joy, our relationship with the Lord isn't as it should be. If there is a time when we have been happier in our spiritual than we are now, our relationship with the Lord isn't as it should be. If there has been a time we felt closer to the Lord than we do now, our relationship with the Lord isn't as it should be.

5. Sin Sickens the Body. Verse 8. Let's look at 1 Corinthians 11:30, For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. Sin makes you feel crushed. Guilt and sorrow are wounds to the soul.

6. Sin Sours the Spirit. Verse 10. Grumpiness, bitterness, hatefulness, continually criticizing, negativism. These are telltale signs of a sour spirit.

7. Sin Seals the Lips. Verse 13. We don't want to tell others about Jesus. Our worship will be affected too. David is praying for God to "open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise" (verse 15).

Steps To Get Right

1. Confidence that God Loves You. Verse 1.

2. Back to God through Confession. Verse 3. See 1 John 1:9, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

3. Cleansing. Verse 7.

4. Consecration. Verse 10. Along with consecration is the concept of brokenness. See verses 16 & 17.
